THREE ENGAGEMENTS, THREE TRANSFORMATIONS

The Challenge

The National Residential Landlords Association is an evolving organisation delivering high-quality services to landlords in the private residential sector. With a very broad scope of initiatives, they needed a partner to work across disciplines to support the change programme including their digital roadmap, project execution and growth strategy.

The Engagements

  1. Investment Appraisal & Acquisition Advisory

The NRLA intended to make a significant technology investment that required rigorous evaluation of competing solutions and potential acquisition targets.

Glenn developed a financial model to appraise and value competing SaaS solutions, assess acquisition targets (financial and commercial diligence), and prepare board papers. The result: An investment delivering value to landlords across the country, underpinned by incisive papers to support a well-informed investment decision.

  1. Operational Improvement – Project Management Office

Recognising that growth required better operational discipline, the NRLA asked Glenn to establish and embed their first Project Management Office (PMO).

Working closely with two senior executives, Glenn delivered:

  • Process flowcharts with clear decision checkpoints – to manage process and risk, establishing clear accountability at each stage
  • A bespoke project financial model with flexible variables and sensitivity analysis – embedding financial ROI into decision-making
  • A prioritisation matrix to optimise constrained resources – increasing execution pace of NRLA projects while prioritising for maximum strategic impact
  • A full governance framework – defining roles and embedding accountability
  • The successful rollout of project management software across the organisation – clarity on tasks and priorities, surfacing issues early for swift resolution
  1. Strategic Advisory

As ambitions grew, so did the strategic questions. How does NRLA assess growth opportunities? Where does NRLA focus its resources? What is NRLA genuinely best at?

Glenn guided the organisation through practical strategic frameworks (including Boston Matrix analysis) and gap analysis to best align resources with desired outcomes.

The result: clarifying which member services to address and sharpening where investment is directed across the service offering and roadmap.

Client Comments

“Glenn’s expertise extends beyond any single discipline. He brings the financial rigour of a CFO, the operational grip of a COO, the strategic instinct of a CEO, and the steady hand of an experienced board advisor—all in one engagement.”

Ben Beadle, CEO, NRLA

Key outcomes:

  • Three distinct projects, three successful deliverables, fully embedded in the organisation
  • Two executives who worked closely with Glenn were subsequently promoted
  • NRLA’s PMO is now well-established and delivering sustained value
  • Strategic frameworks now guide resource allocation decisions
  • The organisation is stronger in how it operates and serves members

Why It Worked

Ben highlighted what separates transformational engagement from transactional:

Glenn didn’t arrive with ready-made answers. He listened, built genuine relationships, and ensured people closest to the work were active participants in shaping solutions. That approach earned trust and created genuine buy-in.”

Reflecting on the Engagements

“Being invited back not once but twice after the first engagement was one of the most rewarding aspects of working with NRLA, and I was delighted to be asked to return.

Establishing the Project Management Office is certainly a highlight. It’s brilliant to see it delivering enduring value to the organisation.

I built a great relationship with the team across all three engagements, and it’s been a pleasure to continue that relationship. Seeing the colleagues I worked closely with go on to develop their careers is fantastic.

NRLA is an organisation with real ambition and a genuine commitment to its members, and I’m proud to have played a part in strengthening how it operates and grows.”
